Aerococcus urinae can, in older males with underlying urinary tract conditions, cause invasive infections such as urosepsis or infective endocarditis. More rarely cases of bacteremia/septicemia and infective endocarditis have been reported. In this study, we report 2 cases of urinary tract infection by Aerococcus sanguinicola.
A descriptive clinical-microbiological study was conducted on the presence of A. sanguinicola causing urinary tract infections. The treatment options for A. urinae seem to include penicillins for less severe cases.
Elderly patients with underlying urological disease have a greater risk of urinary tract infections due to uncommon pathogens. An increased awareness of aerococci and the introduction of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, has led to an increased isolation of Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola from human urine and blood. There is synergy between penicillin and aminoglycosides against some A. urinae isolates and this combination is often used in aerococcal infective endocarditis. The presence of A. sanguinicola occurred in elderly patients with previous urological disease and a significant count in urine obtained through bladder catheterization. A retrospective chart review was performed on 92 patients from whom 118 isolates of Aerococcus sanguinicola (n = 52) or Aerococcus urinae (n = 66) were obtained from urine cultures between October 2007 and June 2008 to assess clinical presentation and antimicrobial susceptibilities.
