Originally built to host community festivals and symphonic music, it was commissioned by the Museum of Outdoor Arts in 1982 and designed by renowned landscape architect George Hargreaves. The amphitheatre began as an earth sculpture (made up only of earth and grass) where local business people could break for a lunchtime concert series sponsored by Museum of Outdoor Arts. MOA has leased the venue out to large promoters such as MCA Concerts, House of Blues and Live Nation.
Also owned by MOA is Samson Park, which is connected to the amphitheatre. Later, walls and seats were installed to make it the venue it is today.
Out of the 18,000 seats, 7,500 are fixed seats and the rest are in the lawn section and fall under the general admission category.
