But be warned, this is not a stroll in the park. It is often phrased as mythical and it is certainly fabled as one of Scotland's premier mountains. To get to Suilven either walk in from Lochinver or if you are up early enough there is car parking just before you get to Glencansip Lodge on Cansip Road.
Steep, wild and remote, this Scottish giant is one of Britain's most striking peaks – reaching its summit is difficult, but with spectacular views stretching out across the Highlands, it's well worth the climbBut Suilven is something of a visual trick. Thanks!
Climbing Suilven was not just a challenge to see if I had the physical strength to get to the top (and the long walk back!) Suilven is indeed a fantastic mountain and the scenery is outstanding. I can’t wait until the kids are a little older and we can embark on some adventures like this. At times the path never seems to get closer to the base of the hill, and once you do finally reach Loch a Choire Dub (loch of the black cliff is a rather apt name) at the foot of the mountain, you will start to wonder just how you are going to get up that cliff face…But up you go – following a small gully you climb directly up the face of the hill – although there is no scrambling required as the path zigzags sharply back and forth. I traveled to Scotland last year and canoed with a group to the base of Suilven. The highest point, Caisteal Liath, lies at the northwest end of this ridge. Thankfully there is anSuilven has just been the star of the Hollywood movie Edie – a film with the message is that it is never too late to challenge yourself. The climb and walk back will take around 8 hours from the car park before Glencansip Lodge. Thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful post with us #AdventureCallingI am in my late fifties and nowhere near as active as many – but as this is my favourite mountain which I have climbed many times over the years, I am drawn back! You would need a perfect day to do the whole walk and climb and it looks like you got that – those blue skies in the photos make everything look even more spectacular.Looks truly amazing. I really need to see ‘Edie’, I’ve heard a lot about it! MAGAZINE Cannot wait. TV SHOW Scramble up to the true summit to your right and the view opens up even further; on a clear day you can see all the way to Skye and the Western Isles – and all the way back to Lochinver. And last time I was on the top 4.5 hours after leaving the car at Glencanisp, partly because I was towed along by teenage children!Great article! Scotland’s weather is best in May and September. View it from its western end at Follow the stalker’s path for about five miles, keeping a lookout for native red deer, wildcats and mountain hares.Once on the rocky flanks of its northern side, you’ll be offered a new perspective as the gnarly slopes transform to a broad, sprawling ridge, a little over a mile in length.Leave the path 0.5km before Loch na Gainimh and walk south-south-west between a series of lochs.A handy gully grants walkers access to a cleft in the ridgeline – rugged Depending on your viewpoint, Suilven shape-shifts from unclimbable to conquerable. It might sound trite, but for me climbing Suilven marked the end of a decade that had had some incredible ups and heartbreaking and life-changing downs. Don’t attempt climbing Suilven in winter unless you are a specialist climber.
My DNA test showed that my roots are from Scotland! Here is how to climb it. Those views! At 731m, some 200m shy of the coveted Munro status, it’s small by mountain standards north of the border.
