The 6 cabins are near the Vermilion River, and there is a boat launch in the park which leads to the river. We linked all the trails (except the lake trail) and they were under 3 miles and practically made a loop. They even have a path to cool off in the San Marcos river which was nice. Drove by Palmetto State Park a number of years ago.

Located on the Vermilion River, Palmetto Island State Park offers a real south Louisiana outdoors experience. And the paths themselves are fairly stable, mostly flat and a few plank covered areas. One part of the trek had a bench nestled in the middle of this fantastic palmetto forest to take in the sites and admire and appreciate the quiet.

With little kids the trail, which eventually runs into the Mesquite trail, takes a little over 1.5 hours with kids and stops. Owls, woodpeckers, dear, birds, toads, snails and more. Great for kids and geriatric dogs. The land was acquired by deeds from private owners and the City of Gonzales in 1934 - 1936 and was opened in 1936. Not an exciting hike, but pretty and so quiet and peaceful. Other than that its great area to ride or walk through.Great park with a variety of natural settings!
