Before anyone else played the part, Rolf Lassgård established the role of Kurt Wallander in the original Swedish film adaptations of Henning Mankell's bestselling crime novels. It's drama that washes over you, it's a gentle pace but thoughtful and I would rather watch this anyday than poor detective alternatives on terrestrial TV. I found the Wallander character fascinating. and this excellent BBC adaptation is almost relentlessly dreary. And, weirdly, that is a good thing. First, you need to know this is a joyless program. The violence factor seems to be higher in this season, yet, the Wallander character has detective skills and feelings that he cannot seem to verbalize which makes for interesting relationships with those characters in both his work and personal life. When another man is reported missing, once again Wallander's life is on hold as he works tirelessly to find a link between the series of vicious murders. The acting was very good. (I will be looking out for other programs with Kenneth Branagh in them! The camerawork adds real depth to the action, verging between documentary and brilliantly directed and focused extreme close ups.

Superb series: took a while for Brannagh's portrayal of fractured detective Kurt Wallander to settle with me, but the acting is excellent and it really captures the atmosphere is southern Sweden. Filming began in August 2008, and continued during 2009.After filming completed on the 2009 series, Henriksson stated that he would not play Wallander again, having only signed the new contract because he thought the 2005 series could have been better.A third and final season, containing six 90-minute episodes, was released in 2013 with Charlotta Jonsson as Linda Wallander.
