Towards the end of the book Emily and her mother "tone the sweep" which is an old ritual that means you hit a plow with something to make a really loud noise to let everyone know that someone has died, and sends the deceased person's soul to heaven.
I just feel the book would best interpreted by an older audience, which has experienced some of what the characters have gone through. I really enjoyed this book over all. One thing I really enjoyed about this book is that Ola's friend Martha has many adopted children one of which helps Emily with everything and is always there for her. Unlike so many books written at an accessible level for reluctant and struggling adolescent readers, this book is well-written and philosophically deep. Ola lost her husband to the violence of southern racism.
Throughout the book you can tell that Diane is jealous of the relationship that Emily and Ola have because she didn't and never had a chance to have a special bond with Ola. its about this gil named Ola and she is an older lady and she lives out in the dessert and her daughter and grand daughter come out to get her casue he is sick with some desiese. Throughout the telling of the other stories, the three main characters struggle to reconcile their relationships with each other and face the uncertain future together.
